Cross Section of a Leaf

Cross Section of Leaf: A leaf contains the following parts:

  • Epidermis: This is a single layer of cells containing few or no chloroplast. The cells are quite transparent and permit most of the light that strikes them to pass through to the underlying cells. The upper surface is coevred with a waxy, water proof cuticle,  which serves to reduce water loss from the leaf.
  • Stomata: These are tiny pores, mostly found in the lower epidermis, which allows gases to enter and exit the leaf more rapidly between the plant and atmosphere.
  • Guard Cells: These are bean- shaped cells that frame the stomata openings. They contain chloroplast and have cell wall. Each pair of guard cells controls the opening and closing of the stomata. Hence, controlling the rate of diffusion of gases and water vapour into and out the leaf.
